Frequently Asked Questions
I recognize that beginning therapy, whether it's for the first time or it's just time for a change, can be a big step! You may have some questions. I have tried to answer them for you below. If you have any additional questions, or just want to chat about your child specifically, please don't hesitate to contact me! I would be more than happy to talk you through the entire process.
What ages do you work with?
I work with children of all ages, but I specialize in early intervention, pre-school, and early school-age children.
Where do therapy sessions take place?
I provide therapy in your child's natural environment—whether that’s your home, their daycare, private school, afterschool program, or ABA clinic. This allows therapy to be meaningful and directly connected to their daily life! *Unfortunately, public schools usually don't let outside therapists on campus.
Afterschool sessions would be too hard to schedule. What can we do?
If your child's school is on board, I would love to come see them during the day. Some schools are totally okay with this, but others (public schools, for example) have policies against outside therapists. If sessions afterschool aren't an option, I often have families that will arrange early pick up or late drop off with their schools, which allows us a little more time for speech therapy! I can also provide attendance notes to verify that a speech session took place.
My child isn’t talking yet. Is it too early for speech therapy?
Not at all! If you have concerns about your child’s communication, trust your instincts. Early intervention can reduce the need for additional supports later in life and set your child up for success from the beginning. At this age, therapy may focus on building engagement, gestures, play, and social interaction—all of which lay the foundation for speech.
What is child-led therapy?
Child-led therapy means that we follow your child’s lead during sessions. Instead of structured drills or therapist-directed activities, we incorporate play-based interventions that feel natural and fun for your child. This approach encourages communication in a way that is naturally engaging, meaningful, and effective.
Do you work with Gestalt Language Processors?
Yes! Some children develop language using echolalia (repeating phrases or scripts from movies, books, or conversations) before moving toward self-generated speech. I use a supportive, affirming approach to support your child’s unique way of learning.
Can I participate in therapy?
Absolutely! I work closely with families to provide strategies, coaching, and support so you feel confident helping your child communicate outside of therapy.
Do you only work with children who have Autism?
No, I work with children of all abilities! However, I do have additional training and specialization in supporting children with Autism.
Do you accept insurance?
Blue Sage Pediatric Speech & Language Therapy does not currently accept insurance. However, I can provide superbills for families who would like to seek reimbursement from their insurance provider using their out-of-network benefits. Ask me how!
What forms of payment are accepted?
Blue Sage accepts credit card/debit card through a HIPAA-compliant practice portal (autopay is also available for your convenience!) HSA/FSA cards are also accepted, as well as cash or check.
What are the costs for speech therapy?
Speech therapy is more than just session time—it’s an opportunity to help your child gain confidence, connect with others, and develop communication skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Without insurance limitations, therapy is focused on what will be most effective—not just what is covered. My goal is to make every session meaningful, so your investment leads to lasting progress that benefits your child for years to come. At our evaluation, you and I will complete a "Good Faith Estimate" that will give you a detailed breakdown of all anticipated costs.
You can also see our fees on our services page, listed at the end of each service description.
What should I expect during the first session?
At our first session, we will assess your child's current communication abilities, discuss your concerns for your child's communication, and make a plan for treatment based on our findings.
What if we need to cancel?
I totally understand that things come up, especially for families with children! If you know that you won't be able to complete a scheduled session (out of town, schedule conflict, doctor's appointment, etc.) please let me know as soon as possible so we can plan ahead and reschedule our visit for a better time. I do ask for at least 24 hours notice, although sooner is always better! There is a fee for late cancellations or "no shows." If your child is sick, please let me know as soon as possible. There will not be a fee for same-day cancellations that are due to legitimate illnesses or emergencies.
Can you refer us to other providers?
Yes! Over the course of my career, I have connected with many local therapists, ranging from private practitioners to larger companies. If I believe your child would benefit from additional support—whether in speech therapy or another discipline such as occupational therapy or physical therapy—I’d be happy to provide a referral to a trusted colleague. I want your child to have a well-rounded and effective therapy team!
How long will my child need speech therapy?
Every child’s journey is unique. Some children make rapid progress and need only a few months of therapy, while others may benefit from ongoing support. Throughout the therapy plan, we will frequently assess for progress and adjust our approach based on your child’s needs. We typically plan therapy in 6 month treatment cycles.
How do we get started?
Getting started is easy! Reach out to me via phone, email, or through the "contact" button my practice portal, and we’ll schedule a free consultation to discuss your child’s needs and how I may be able to help. I look forward to partnering with you on this journey!
